Thurisaz as a Birth Rune
Protection through action, breakthrough, conflict, force
Neighbouring Runes of the Year
Thurisaz is the birth rune of everyone born between July 30 and August 13. In the runic year it follows Uruz, the rune of strength, and comes before Ansuz, the rune of word and knowledge.
The rune looks like a thorn: an upright line with a sharp spur. It is linked with the giants and with Thor, the thunder god whose hammer guards the world against chaos. It is the rune of strength that defends and breaks through barriers. The rune's chief gift is protecting what is yours and forcing a path where there is none.
Thurisaz as a Birth Rune
Thurisaz people are decisive and direct. They don't shy away from clashes and are quick to defend themselves and those close to them. In a hard situation they are the ones who take the first sharp step that gets things moving.
Thurisaz is the energy of a thunderstorm: powerful, sudden, cleansing. The rune asks you to aim that force at protection and breakthrough, not at destruction for its own sake.
Strengths
- Protection. You stand by your own and don't let them be hurt.
- Decisiveness. You can act fast while others hesitate.
- Breakthrough. You break down walls that seemed impassable.
- Honesty. You speak plainly, even when it's awkward.
The Shadow Side
The flip side of Thurisaz is aggression. The defensive reflex fires before you have worked out whether it is needed, and the sharp thorns wound people who weren't attacking.
The other extreme is the habit of solving everything by force. Not every wall needs breaking; sometimes there is a door in it. What the rune teaches is to stop and choose where a blow is needed and where patience is.
In Love and Relationships
In love you are a passionate, devoted partner and a real protector. Beside you, someone you love feels safe.
Watch your sharpness. Quarrels with you can be stormy, and words can wound more than you meant. Cool down before talking about something important.
Work and Calling
Natural fits include work that calls for courage and protection: law and advocacy, security, rescue services, the military, surgery, sport, crisis management, any project where resistance has to be broken.
You are strong in conflict and crisis. Good fortune comes to you through decisive steps at the right moment.
Thurisaz in the Runic Year
The half-month of Thurisaz falls at the end of July and the start of August, the time of summer storms and the first reaping. Nature is still strong, but a turn toward harvest is already in the air. Thurisaz is the third rune of Freyr's aett.
Before Thurisaz comes Uruz, raw strength; Thurisaz gives it direction and an edge. After it comes Ansuz, the rune of the word: after the breakthrough it is time to understand and name what has opened up.
