Nauthiz as a Birth Rune

Nauthiz people learn early that not everything comes easily. But hardship is exactly what makes them strong: they learn patience, resourcefulness and how to make do with what is necessary.

Nauthiz is fire made by friction when there is no other fire. The rune asks you to see need not as a punishment but as a teacher: limits show what truly matters.

• Endurance. You can bear and wait when others give up.
• Resourcefulness. When things are scarce, you find solutions others don't think of.
• Sobriety. You tell what is needed from what is surplus.
• Self-reliance. You are used to relying on yourself.

Nauthiz's shadow is living in constant scarcity. The person gets so used to doing without that they won't allow themselves plenty even when it is near, and treat joy as a luxury.

Another pitfall is bitterness: hardship breeds a sense of injustice, and the person shuts themselves away in resentment. The rune reminds you that need is temporary, while the fire won in it remains.

In a relationship you are a loyal, dependable partner who doesn't leave in hard times. You value a relationship that has been tested and know how to support someone close in trouble.

Be careful not to turn love into a trial. Let the relationship be light and joyful, not only strong.

Nauthiz suits work that calls for patience and ingenuity: engineering and invention, medicine, social work, crisis management, science, crafts, working with limited resources, any long project.

You shine wherever results must be achieved with too little money and time. Recognition comes to you slowly but surely.

Nauthiz's period falls in the second half of November, when the days are short and cold and the stores must be husbanded. In the old days it was a time of patience and thrift. Nauthiz is the second rune of Heimdall's aett.

Before Nauthiz comes Hagalaz: the storm has passed, and now you must hold out. After it comes Isa, the rune of ice: need gives way to a complete standstill, a time to be still and wait.
