Berkano as a Birth Rune
Growth, birth, family, nurturing, healing, new beginnings
Neighbouring Runes of the Year
Berkano is the birth rune of everyone born between March 15 and March 30. Its neighbours in the year are Tiwaz, the rune of the warrior, which rules just before it, and Ehwaz, the rune of the horse and movement, which follows.
The name Berkano means "birch". The birch is the first tree to turn green in spring, and in Northern traditions it was a symbol of birth, motherhood and renewal. The rune looks like the letter B with pointed curves, like two hills or two breasts. It is the rune of growth, care and new beginnings. The rune's chief gift is nurturing, protecting and giving life to the new.
Berkano as a Birth Rune
Berkano people are born keepers of life. They know how to care for, grow and support: children, ideas, plants, projects, people. Around them everything grows and blossoms.
Their care is gentle but persistent, like a birch that pushes through even on rock. Berkano's lesson is to help others grow without forgetting to grow yourself.
Strengths
- Care. You sense what someone needs and give it gently.
- Nurturing. Under your care everything develops: people, projects, gardens.
- Renewal. You know how to begin again and give things a second life.
- Gentle strength. You get your way not by pushing but through patience and warmth.
The Shadow Side
The flip side of Berkano is care that smothers. The person looks after others so closely that they deny them independence and dissolve into that care themselves.
The other extreme is fear of letting go: what you have raised must one day be released into its own life. The rune reminds you that true care prepares for freedom.
In Love and Relationships
In a couple you are a tender, caring and devoted partner. You build a home and comfort, and many Berkano people dream of a family and children.
Try not to become your partner's parent. A relationship of equals nourishes both; the permanent role of guardian wears you out.
Work and Calling
Natural fits include work tied to growth and care: teaching and working with children, medicine and midwifery, psychology, gardening and farming, ecology, social work, developing projects and teams.
You flourish where you can nurture something and watch it grow. Success comes through patience and care.
Berkano in the Runic Year
The half-month of Berkano falls in the second half of March, at the spring equinox. Day equals night, the snow melts and the birches fill with sap. It is the start of spring and new growth. Berkano is the second rune of Tyr's aett.
Before Berkano comes Tiwaz: the struggle between winter and spring has ended in victory. After it comes Ehwaz, the rune of the horse: life, now awake, starts to move.
