Tarot Birth Card Calculator

Find your Tarot birth cards from your date of birth: the Personality and Soul cards by the Tarot School method, with the meaning of every birth card.

Your Tarot birth card is the Major Arcana card your date of birth reduces to. It is not a prediction and not a verdict but an archetype: an image of your central life theme, your natural gifts and the lessons you keep coming back to. Some readers call it your "sun sign in the Tarot": it stays with you for life and doesn't change from one reading to the next.

Most people have two birth cards. The Personality card shows how you show up in the world and how others tend to see you. The Soul card sits underneath it: your deeper motivation, what you are moving toward even when you don't notice it. Together they make a small but telling portrait.

How Your Birth Cards Are Calculated

We use the Tarot School method, the one taught by leading Tarot schools such as Biddy Tarot. Add the month, the day, the first two digits of the year and the last two digits of the year. If the total has three digits, read the first two as one number and add the third. Any number over 22 is reduced by adding its digits until it is 22 or less.

That number is your Personality card. Add its digits and you get your Soul card. For example, for May 8, 1989:

  • 05 + 08 + 19 + 89 = 121
  • 12 + 1 = 13, Death, the Personality card
  • 1 + 3 = 4, The Emperor, the Soul card

If the total reduces straight to a single digit, it goes "up" to its two-digit partner: 8 becomes 17, 9 becomes 18. That is why everyone gets a pair. The number 22 is The Fool, and its Soul card, 2 + 2 = 4, is The Emperor.

The special case is 19. It gives three cards at once: The Sun as the Personality card, Wheel of Fortune as the linking card and The Magician as the Soul card. About one person in twenty has this trio.

Why Another Site May Give You a Different Card

There is more than one method, and that's fine. The terms "Personality card" and "Soul card" come from the American Tarot author Mary K. Greer in the 1980s. In her version the year is added whole, and more than half of people end up with a single card instead of a pair. The Tarot School splits the year in two, so almost everyone gets a pair. That is the version we use.

Some calculators simply add every digit of the date, which gives one card and often a different one. None of the methods is more "correct" than the others: they are different conventions. Go with the one whose description speaks to you.

How to Read Your Birth Cards

Treat the pair as one theme played on two levels. The Personality and Soul cards are always linked by number. Death (13) and The Emperor (4) are both a "four": outwardly the person knows how to change and start over, inwardly they build the solid order that holds those changes up.

Every birth card has a bright side and a shadow side. The bright side shows where your talent lies and what comes naturally. The shadow side is what that energy turns into when you forget about it or push it too hard. Read both: the portrait is incomplete without either.

FAQ

No. It comes from your date of birth and stays with you for life. What changes is how you live it: when young, the shadow side often shows more, and with experience the bright side opens up.

That happens when your date adds up to 19. The Sun, Wheel of Fortune and The Magician describe someone with strong creative energy and a sense of timing. The Wheel links personality and soul: the turning points through which you come to yourself.

Not at all. A birth card describes character, not fate. Death as a birth card means a gift for deep transformation, and The Devil speaks of strong passion and a talent for the material world.

In the deck The Fool is 0, but a sum can't be zero. In birth card numerology The Fool takes the place of 22, the end of the Major Arcana, and its Soul card is The Emperor (2 + 2 = 4).
