Dagaz as a Birth Rune
Dawn, breakthrough, change for the better, awakening, clarity
Neighbouring Runes of the Year
Dagaz is the birth rune of everyone born between June 15 and June 29. It closes the runic year: before it stands Othala, the rune of heritage, and after it Fehu, the rune of wealth and beginnings, opens the new year.
The name Dagaz means "day". The rune looks like two triangles joined at their points, or an hourglass lying on its side: the moment when darkness turns to light. It is the rune of dawn, breakthrough and awakening. To those born in these days it brings a particular gift: clarity and a capacity for sudden insight.
Dagaz as a Birth Rune
Dagaz people can see light where others see only darkness. Their lives have moments of sudden understanding after which everything changes. They bring clarity and hope.
Dagaz is the border between night and day, end and beginning. The rune's lesson is not to fear transitions: every sunset leads to a new dawn.
Strengths
- Clarity. You see the heart of things and help others see it.
- Breakthrough. You find a way out where there seemed to be none.
- Optimism. You believe in the dawn, even on the darkest night.
- Renewal. You know how to start again with a clean slate.
The Shadow Side
Dagaz's shadow is waiting for a miracle. The person waits for a revelation that will change everything and doesn't take the ordinary steps that can't be skipped.
Another pitfall is endless beginnings: each new dawn seems more important than carrying the work through to evening. What the rune teaches is that a day isn't made of morning alone.
In Love and Relationships
In love you are an inspiring, bright partner. You bring hope, freshness and clarity to a relationship and can see the best in the person you love.
Remember to keep the light on ordinary days too, not only in moments of revelation. Love lives in routine as well.
Work and Calling
Dagaz suits work that calls for clarity and renewal: science and invention, consulting, teaching, psychology, medicine, creative work, start-ups, reform, any work that brings people the light of understanding.
You shine wherever a breakthrough and a fresh look are needed. Recognition comes through sudden ideas that you carry through into action.
Dagaz in the Runic Year
Dagaz's period falls in the second half of June and at the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. Light is at full strength, and it is at this point that the runic circle closes. Dagaz is the eighth and last rune of Tyr's aett and of the whole Futhark.
Before Dagaz comes Othala: the heritage is gathered in. After it comes Fehu: the new year begins with the first rune, and the circle repeats.
