Gebo as a Birth Rune

Gebo people live through relationships. They need to give and receive, to make friends, work together and create alliances in which everyone wins. They sense when the balance in a bond is broken.

For the old Northern peoples a gift always called for a return: that is how ties between people were made. That is Gebo's lesson: a true gift neither binds nor humbles; it joins people as equals.

• Generosity. You give from the heart and rejoice in other people's joy.
• Partnership. You create alliances in which everyone gets their due.
• A sense of balance. You notice when someone gives more than they receive.
• Gratitude. You value what life and other people give you.

The weak spot of Gebo is giving to create debt. The person gives so that others will owe them, or gives themselves away completely in hope of a return that never comes.

The second trap is dissolving into the other: the union becomes more important than your own boundaries. The rune reminds you that in a true exchange each person stays themselves.

Love is life's greatest gift to you. You strive for a partnership of equals in which both give and both receive. You are attentive and know how to show love in small things.

What matters is keeping the balance alive. If you keep giving more, say so out loud before what is left unsaid turns into resentment.

People with this rune do well in work built on cooperation: business partnerships, diplomacy and negotiation, client work, charity, social work, event planning, mediation.

You are strong in teams and alliances. Recognition comes through the right partners and honest exchange.

Gebo's half-month falls at the turn of September and October, after the autumn equinox. The harvest is in, and in the old days this was the time of feasts, weddings and exchanging gifts. Gebo is the seventh rune of Freyr's aett.

Before Gebo comes Kenaz: the craftsman has made something, and it can be given. After it comes Wunjo, the rune of joy: generous exchange brings shared gladness.
